Help us organize.  A strong grassroots constituency is the best defense for the Catskills.  Help us table at regional events, do research, help with website maintenance, writing, phone banking and outreach.

Join our Catskill Trailkeeper program! This is our new project devoted to making information about the extensive network of Catskill hiking trails more available. Trailkeepers will help educate visitors and residents, including about how to protect the Catskill wilderness.

We’ll be working with existing trail-maintenance groups and other outdoors enthusiasts to make the Catskill Mountain trails even better!

We’ll also need help with our campaign for a more sustainable Catskills.

Job Title: Senior Campaign Representative for Natural Gas

Department: Conservation

Reports To: Deputy Conservation Director

Context: Plans, directs and manages all aspects, including goal setting and planning of activities related to the Natural Gas Campaign. Develops and determines strategies and priorities.

Scope: The Senior Campaign Representative has overall program management responsibility, and provides experienced leadership and strategic planning for Natural Gas component Campaign. Assigns priorities and timetables, plans and develops strategies, evaluates campaign/program effectiveness. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, renewable and natural gas industry executives and other business leaders, the media and other organizations. Program supervision responsibility includes developing/managing campaign activities, developing fundraising proposals, and raising funds. Acts as a senior advisor to staff colleagues and volunteers.

Job Activities:

1. Directs Natural Gas Campaign by influencing state and federal policy, and participating in ongoing coalition efforts. Works with national and chapter staff and volunteers to develop the program/campaign plan, oversee implementation of the plan, and assist in fundraising efforts.

2. Conducts media outreach activities related to the campaign/program, including helping to develop media outreach plans, serving as Sierra Club spokesperson to national media outlets, and promotes volunteer media exposure.

3. Coordinates the development and preparation of campaign issues information including the writing, editing and distribution of fact sheets, newsletters, and educational materials which includes writing, editing and reviewing of articles for conservation-related publications.

4. Provides analysis and support of campaign budget and quarterly forecasts.

5. Works to develop and insure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.

6. Plans and develops projects for grant funding, handles personal contacts, solicitation and on-going relationships with specific foundations involved with the projects.

7. In cooperation with the major gift fundraising staff, participates in major donor personal solicitation and cultivation, and foundation solicitation and relations.

8. Represents the Sierra Club to the general public.

9. Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to staff and volunteers.

10. Provides conservation training and motivation to volunteers.

11. Networks and builds relationships with critical decision makers and key players working on natural gas.

12. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.

13. Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

-- B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science, or a closely related field.

-- 3-5 years experience as a senior representative, or in a comparable position in another organization which includes substantial experience planning and managing a national level legislative campaign, including strategy, organizing, lobbying , media, fundraising, program/employee management, budget planning and management, and work with senior level political and business leaders.

-- Valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.

-- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.

-- 3-5 years prior experience in fundraising that includes foundation relations, individual solicitation of major gifts, and grant-funded project development and oversight. Demonstrated effectiveness as a major gift fundraiser.

-- Substantial experience, demonstrated skill and ability, in national media relations. Includes effective television and radio presence, knowledge of media technologies including video, radio and print production processes.

-- Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.

Seasonal/Summer Employment 

      Forest Health Positions Available

Forestry Technician 1 B Seasonal

    The Seasonal Forestry Technician 1 positions (FT1) with the Forest Health Section of the Division of Lands & Forests will be located out of one of several Regional DEC offices statewide.  The position’s duties involve fieldwork collecting information on several forest health agents within each Region.   As a member of a survey team, each FT1 will be responsible for assisting with the implementation of a sample survey for specific forest health affecting agents in specific forest types.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Thirty (30) semester college credit hours, including or supplemented by twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology, botany, land surveying, and forest biology, OR

  1. One (1) year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two (2) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings: forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.

 

    Candidates must possess a valid New York State driver=s license at the time of appointment, or demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.

 

Principal Duties:

  • Interpret aerial photos, maps and GIS products to locate selected study sites. 
  • Contact property owners to obtain permission to enter private property. 
  • Locate specific study sites and reconstruct old plot configurations or establish new plot parameters, as instructed.
  • Inspect for and collect data on forest health affecting agents and/or visible forest damage. Complete, store and manage the sample records of information and observations. 
  • Conduct field surveys with the use of a GPS (global positioning system) and plot survey transects and records on physical or digital maps.
  • Acquire and inventory digital photographs of specific agents encountered
  • Collect sample materials and preserve specimens of forest health agents and other physical specimens of interest.
  • On occasion, the FT1 may be required to set up and assist with interpretation of forest health displays at appropriate local events within the crews Region.
  • The FT1 will be responsible for maintaining the accurate records of the forest species encountered, the collected forest descriptive data and the location and dimensions of the survey at each site.

Required knowledge:

  • Practical understanding of standard forest practices and techniques, including: knowledge of tree species.
  • Working knowledge of inventory techniques and procedures used in plot assessment and description.
  • Knowledge of accepted safety practices by which to prevent injury to self, staff and public and/or private property.
  • Skill in using and understanding maps, aerial photo interpretation, GPS (global positioning systems), digital cameras and microscopes to assist in locating and recording survey sites.

 

      Candidates with a working knowledge of forest health affecting agents may be given preference.

 
 
 
 

Duration of Employment

    The duration of employment will be for three consecutive (3) months with a preferred starting date of June 1, 2010 although some positions may be available in May.  Successful applicants will be required to take a training course designed and presented by the Division of Lands & Forest.  This course and other training events will be included in the duration of employment.

 

Primary Work Location

    Employees will be assigned a primary work location that is geographically convenient to the study sites they will be visiting.  Room and board is the responsibility of the employee.  The Division will, however, make an attempt to locate housing at a DEC facility, where available.  NOTE: DEC housing is not guaranteed nor is the use of DEC housing a requirement, if offered.  Any expenses for room and/or board at the primary work location will be the responsibility of the employee.  Accommodation and living expenses for work outside the primary area will be reimbursed at the standard State rates prescribed for the area.

 

Standard Work Week

    The standard workweek runs from Thursday to Wednesday, eight (8) hours per day, five (5) days per week.  Overtime must be approved in advance and is paid for time worked over forty (40) hours.

 

Salary

    The beginning compensation rate for a Forestry Technician 1, as of April 1, 2010 is $14.80 per hour.

U.S. Census Bureau’s Newburgh Local 2010 Census Office is recruiting applicants for temporary, good-paying jobs (range $11-18/hour) with flexible hours to help ensure the 2010 Census is a success.  The Newburgh Office is looking for applicants in Sullivan County. 

Specifically, census takers, also known as enumerators, are needed to conduct in-person interviews with community residents who do not return census questionnaires. These positions need to be filled by individuals with flexible schedules as work may occur in evenings and on weekends. Some positions may involve shift work. All temporary census employees must be able to attend training, for which they will be compensated. Most training sessions are held during the day on weekdays; occasionally, a session may be held in the evening or on weekends. 

Job applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, be able to pass a background check, and complete a 30-minute, multiple-choice, employment test that measures knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform a variety of census jobs. In most cases, workers will also be required to possess a valid driver's license and have use of a vehicle. U.S. citizenship is required to work for the 2010 Census except in rare occasions when no qualified U.S. citizens are available.   We are seeking bilingual applicants throughout the district.
